How to Choose a Book

The idea of choosing a new book may not sound like a challenge, but nowadays, there are just so many options!  As parents, it is a great idea to teach our children ‘how’ to choose the perfect book for them.

Take your child to the library and let them explore the children’s section.  Ask them to choose a minimum of five books that are of interest to them.  Once the books have been chosen, sit down at a table together and begin the ‘new book’ search.  Ask your child to:

  1. Look at the cover-does the illustration grab your attention?  If so-proceed.
  2. Is there a summary-if so, ask your child to read it.  Ask them if this is still a book that interests them. If it does-proceed.
  3. Now, have your child skim and scan the book.  All this means is to flip through the pages and read a few lines here and there.  If your child has difficulty reading three or more words-that book is probably not going to be a good match.

Happy Reading!
