Looking for a way to get the family reading together?? Why not host your very own Family P.J. Reading Party?  This may very well be the simplest party that you have ever planned or hosted in the comforts of your very own living room floor!

What is a Family P.J. Reading Party?

The Family P.J. Reading Party is a night at home with the family, in their P.J.’s of course, enjoying great books, laughs and possibly even some snacks!  (That’s completely up to you!)

In order to get everyone excited about this night create an invitation and post it on the refrigerator.  It can look something like this:

The Perez Family P.J. Reading Night!!

When: July 9, 2010 @ 6:30-8:00pm (after dinner)

Where: In the living room

Why: To share our love of reading with one another

What to bring: Yourselves in your PJ’s, your book and a cozy blanket or comforter

Mom, that’s me, will provide everyone’s favorite snack!

We’re all here…now what?

Now that everyone has arrived in their P.J.s and book in tow, it’s time to get this party started! Entice your family with a cozy spot to enjoy their reading for about 30 minutes or so.  Afterwards, invite each person to share a little bit about what they are reading.

Conversation starters may include:

  • Tell us about what you are reading…
  • What is your favorite scene/part and why?
  • Which character do you relate to the best and why?
  • If you could re-write the ending what would you change?
  • How would this reading be different if told from another perspective?
  • Would you recommend this reading to anyone else?  Why or why not?

Swap a book

After everyone has shared a bit about his or her fabulous books, you and your family may choose to have snack time to reenergize the brain for some more reading.  Everyone now knows a little bit about one another’s books, which is wonderful.  Encourage your family to swap books with another family member and see if this will spark some interest in a future reading selection.  If your child/children are younger, choose your favorite section of your book and read to them out loud!  By reading aloud to your children, you will be modeling what great reading ‘sounds’ like as well as showing your enthusiasm for reading!

Enthusiasm is contagious!!  Let’s all share our reading enthusiasm and begin planning our Family P.J. Reading Parties now!

I will be posting my Family P.J. Reading Party pictures soon…..

Happy Learning as a family!
